Getting a Diabetes diagnosis?

Diabetes Diagnosis 5 Comments »

what would be the average cost for a test for diabetes? I do not have any kind of health insurance, but I would like to get tested.

Do you know of anybody with diabetes? If you do, then you should be able to get the basic test free. OR you can even get a free glucometer through the internet sometimes. Search on free glucometer. It is easy finger stick you can do yourself and is very accurate. So you fast from dinner time until the next morning, about 12 hrs. When you wake up, before anything else you do, test it or get your diabetic friend to test it. Below 100, you are ok. Above 100 and you need to be concerned. Over 140 and you probably are diabetic and need to arrange further tests. I bet they could do it at the local health clinic, etc. It can be done by a nurse, doesn’t have to be a Dr. Or go to CVS and if they have a minute clinic they can do it fairly cheaply. Although might be cheaper to get a generic glucometer and do it yourself.

True or False statement on public health guidelines?

Diabetes Guidelines 2008 2 Comments »

"Public guidelines have virtually nothing to do with public health. They have everything to do with appeasing the demands of powerful vested interests that aggressively lobby policymakers, provide money to researchers, and donate millions to influencial health organizations such as the American Heart Association , American Diabetes Association, and so on".

- Anthony Colpo

False, like most of Colpo’s statements.

What is hypo treatment for people with diabetes?

Diabetes Treatment Guidelines 4 Comments »

I might be a diabetic and a lot of people in the diabetes section are talking about hypo treatments. What are they?

When we go Hypo, we are going low and falling fast in the glucose column. Anything under 60 is cause for concern.

I like half a regular coke to treat for Hypos! Much much better and easier than getting a can of OJ out of the freezer and mixing it up and the rest of it goes to waste because it raises glucose levels fast. I can easier pour out the other half the coke than nearly a quart of orange juice.

Other treatments are any candy that is not chocolate or nuts, any sugars or sugary foods as long as they have no fats in them at all. Fats in the chocolate, nuts and other things slow the absorbtion of the sugar (carbohydrate) down so it won’t bring the glucose levels up as fast as we would like when we are getting that low.

are there or what are the ethical issues with diabetes diagnosis testing?

Diabetes Diagnosis 1 Comment »

Any diagnostic test should be carried out with the consent of the individual unless one is unconscious and could not give the consent. In such a scenario and the life is under threat diagnostic test can be carried out with out consent. However if diabetic diagnostic test is carried out at a laboratory a patient should present himself and give his blood sample for testing it imply his consent. In case of urine, the sample should be taken in presence of the lab technician which again imply consent. In case of self testing strip tests, the reading equipment need to be checked for accuracy at regular interval and the strip should be within the expiry period.
