Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosis Question?

Diabetes Diagnosis 5 Comments »

Hi, anyone out there with experience of diagnosing diabetes help with this please.

I was showing usual signs of type 2 so had blood tests done which showed a result of 22. I was prescribed 1000mg of metformin a day 3 days ago which I was told would take up to 6 weeks to show results. However both yesterday and today when I tested my blood at different times of the day my levels have been averaging out at around 9.

With the levels dropping so quickly I was wondering,
1. Can the metformin work so quickly?
2. If not then have I possibly been misdiagnosed?

Thanks for any advice.

Your bm’s can change substantially during the day anyway, depending on when you eat and what you eat, especially if you’ve taken advice to heart and completely cut out sugars etc. That’s why they usually don’t recommend self-testing your blood frequently, or for that matter at all, with Type 2. It’s unnecessary and often leads to confusion and alarm over the results. Instead you’ll be tested on maybe a 6 monthly basis to see what the average has been over several months.

Don’t fret over it too much, let your professionals tell you what you need to do.

what is the different of treatment between diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2?

Diabetes Treatment Guidelines 2 Comments »

pharmacology and non-pharmacology… thanks…

Diabetes 1 your body produces no insulin and you must take insulin to keep your blood sugar under control (diet, excercise and oral hypoglycemics will sometimes be given to help control sugars).

Diabetes 2 your body does not produce enough insulin so treatment is aimed at helping your body control sugar … start by controlling diet, then add oral hypoglycemics (metformin, glyburide, avandia etc…) and insulin only if necessary.

HbAic test to see wether treatment is helping with longterm sugar control.

Hope this helps,

C

Read the case study and answer the questions that follow:
Debra is a 45 year old woman of Pacific Islander descent who has been living with diabetes for 5 years. She has come in for a check-up. She has always considered herself to be overweight, and does not take part in regular physical activity. Debra does not take insulin to control her diabetes, but does have to take oral medications to help her cells become more receptive to her own insulin. Her lab tests show the following: HbA1c 8.3%, serum cholesterol 214 mg/dl, and triglycerides 275 mg/dl.

When Debra was diagnosed with diabetes she did not seek the help and expertise of a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). Instead she followed the diet advice of her great aunt who also has diabetes, which was simply to avoid anything with sugar. This guideline, though simple, has not been working well for Debra and her sweet tooth.

Questions: (All answers can be found in the notes)
1.Interpret the results of Debra’s lab tests.
a.Are they within normal limits? Explain. (1 point)
b.If not, what are the normal levels of those particular lab tests? (1 point)
c.We know that Debra has already been diagnosed with diabetes, but her lab results indicate that she is at risk for another disease/condition. What is she at risk for and why? (2 points)

2.Based on the information provided in the case study, what type of diabetes does Debra likely have? What have you based your answer on? (2 points)

3.During the Diabetes lecture, we discussed diet changes that can be beneficial in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. What are these diet changes? (2 points)

4.Which of the risk factors (not the same as complications) for diabetes discussed in class (in the notes) apply to Debra? (1 points)

5.Explain briefly the functions of insulin and glucagon, respectively, with regard to blood glucose control. (2 points)

6.Explain the major difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. (1 point)

7.Briefly explain the following terms: Glycogenesis, Glycogenolysis, Gestational diabetes, Polyphagia, Insulin resistance, Hypoglycemia, Glycated hemoglobin, Glucometer. (8 points)

I think it would be better if you did your own homework. Go to webmd and research your project.

Type one diabetes diagnosis.?

Diabetes Diagnosis 7 Comments »

I know it’s foolish to inquire medical advice over the internet but i’m just looking for a second opinion before i return to the doctors again.

I am a seventeen year old girl, i’m 5′6 and i weight eight stone and half an ounce.
I am constantly tired. Exhausted even.
I am always hungry. I eat, i eat and i eat. Everything from junk food to healthy food and i never feel full, i recently went to the doctors due to rapid weight loss and failure to gain even a pound and thirst problems.
(these problems have been around for a long time).
I have terrible short-sightedness and suffer from blurry vision and headaches even when i wear my glasses.
When i went to the doctors, she set me up for some blood tests, she thought i may have a thyroid problem or anaemia.
All of the tests came back negative.
I’m wondering if i do suffer from type one diabetes is there a unique test to prove this or would it have shown up in any blood test?

Also, i am not sure if this is relavent, but my eldest sister suffers from type one diabetes.

Any (relavent) feedback is welcome.

Your sister has a Glucose meter. When you wake up do a fasting test yourself. Here are the numbers:

What Are Normal Blood Glucose And Blood Sugar Levels

There are various methods to determine blood glucose level. Some tests give you accurate diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes, while others will tell you how well you are managing your diabetes.

Fasting Blood Sugar Test:
Measures the blood sugar level after 8 hours fast or overnight. Normal fasting blood glucose level is less than 100mg/dl. If your fasting blood glucose level is from 100mg/dl to 125mg/dl then you will have impaired blood glucose level also known as Pre-Diabetes. If your blood glucose level is above 125mg/dl then your doctor will diagnose as a patient of diabetes. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may repeat the fasting blood glucose test on any other day. If you have blood glucose level of 126mg/dl or higher in two consecutive tests, then you may have diabetes. If you have blood glucose level greater than 200mg/dl and you have symptoms of diabetes like increased thirst or hunger, frequent urination, weight loss, blurred vision etc, then you may be diagnosed with diabetes mellitus without confirming it with second test.

Random Blood Glucose Test:
Random blood Glucose test gives your blood sugar at any time in a day. Normal random blood sugar level should be less than 200mg/dl. If your random blood glucose level is between 140mg/dl to 200mg/dl then you will have pre-diabetes.

This is the easiest and quickest way to deterime if you have diabetes. Then its up to doctor to determine if you have Type 1 Or Type 2 diabetes.

Anemia and possibly gestational diabetes at 29 weeks?

Diabetes Guidelines 2008 4 Comments »

I had my glucose test today and got the results tonight and although a normal reading is 7 mine is 9. I have to do the three hour test next week, and although I’m not to worried about low iron, as that can be controlled, I’m freaked out about the GD. To top it off it’s the day before Good Friday so I’m really going to suffer for want of chocolate this week.
The only risk factor I seem to have is that my older sister developed GD which turned into type 2 diabetes after the birth of her second baby. I’m 26, very small, my baby is a good size with good readings, I’ve always been incredibly active (but I was a gymnast/cheerleader so there’s no way I could keep up my exersice regime now) and I’m desperate to have a vaginal birth with no epidural.
I need some guidelines on what to eat(-as in, fruit contains a lot of sugar but people reccommend fresh fruit, so what do I do???) and I need foods that are high in iron and low in sugar but I have no idea where to start. . The GD isn’t guaranteed yet-but I have had a LOT of sweets since I got pregnant and am wondering if that has caused this.
Has anyone else ever had both of these at the same time? If so, what did you eat and what was the outcome?
Or has anyone ever had a high blood sugar reading that turned out to be normal after the three hour test?

Don’t change anything right now. Eat as you normall do, you want the three hour test to be an accurate representation of how your body is responding to the way you normally eat.

Many people fail the one hour test and pass the three hour test, so don’t get too stressed out yet.

If you fail the 3 hour test your doctor or their nurse will give you information on diet changes, what and how and when to eat. Usually GDM can be controlled with those diet changes, but some women, no matter how disciplined they are cannot control it and sometimes insulin is necessary. The vast majority of women do NOT develop Type II after delivery and the GDM goes away immediately after delivery.

Hang in there, you’ll be ok!

So confused about the gestational diabetes carb diet!! HELP PLEASE!?

Diabetes Guidelines 2008 1 Comment »

This is so confusing. I need to know if this is alright. I just started my gestational diabetes low-carb diet. My three meals a day range from 30-45g of carbs while my three snacks range from 15-30g of carbs. I don’t want to keep eating just turkey sandwiches and fruits and vegetables. Would it be ok if I ate the following, as long as it is within carbohydrate guidelines?

For example ..
(3) chicken strips from Sheetz w/ nacho cheese – 26g carbs, no sugar
Grilled chicken wrap from Sheetz w/ cheddar cheese, cooked peppers & onions, bacon, & tomatoes – 31g carbs, 3g sugars
McChicken from McDonald’s w/o the bun, mayo, & lettuce (just the plain chicken patty) – 10g carbs

Can I eat this stuff (obviously not at the same meal or anything) since it’s within the carb guidelines I am supposed to follow?
Also .. some more examples .. not that I want to eat this stuff daily or anything, just using these as examples ..
Low Carb Options (each under 10g* of carbs):
• Low Carb WHOPPER® Sandwich* • (3g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (5g)
• Low Carb DOUBLE WHOPPER® Sandwich* • (3g)
• Low Carb DOUBLE WHOPPER® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (5g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER JR.® Sandwich* • (1g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER JR.® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (2g)
• Low Carb BK™ Double Stacker Sandwich* (5g)
• Low Carb BK™ Triple Stacker Sandwich* (6g)
• Low Carb BK™ Quad Stacker Sandwich* (6g)

(They all come without the bun!)
My numbers weren’t that bad they said, they didn’t give me exacts though, I’m going to ask them next time I go in. I’m not asking you to verify if my diet is good — I just want to know if I am counting carbs for a Diabetic Diet could I eat this stuff since the carbs are within guidelines? Obviously not for every meal every day, but maybe one meal a week or something like that.

Just to add — my levels today were -
Fasting – 81
1 hour after breakfast – 103
1 hour after lunch – 105
(didn’t have dinner yet .. and YES my doctor has me monitor ONE hour after a meal, not two!)

Your doctor or nutritionist would better be able to answer your question. I had GD with my second baby and was on a GD diet to control the diabetes, and never had to follow a diet like yours. There were a few things I had to avoid obviously like real sugar and items that are considered the not so good carbs, but I guess my GD was more under control than yours. I do not know what your test scores have been.

Terrified After Diabetes Diagnosis… Please Help?

Diabetes Diagnosis 6 Comments »

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes last week and now I feel like my life is ending. I’m not even 15 yet and I feel like I’ve been handed a death setence. I know I might be blowing it out of preportion a little but diabetes can be fatal.

My friends are treating me different as well. They refuse to touch me as if I’m going to either break or they’ll catch it. I feel like no one can relate to me anymore. My parents/step-parents have done nothing but cry and I can’t put up with it anymore.

I just want to lock myself away. My doctor has the worst bedside manner in the world and just keeps shoving information down my throat. He wants me to wear an OmniPod.

Is there anyone on here who has diabetes/diabetic relative? How did you cope when first diagnosed and did your friends treat you different?

How can I get over this phase of depression? I don’t want my life to be ruled by this disease.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I didn’t know Nick Jonas wore one as well. That makes me feel a bit better. And yeah, I like the Jonas Brothers.

This is NOT the end of the world nor even the world as you knew it last week!!

Even my adult friends didn’t know what to do when I was diagnosed several years back!

You need to read and heed the info the doctor gave you. You can live to be 100+ if you pay attention to that information!! And you can be much healthier than any of your so called friends as well.

So we have to do either MDI, multiple daily injections with their attendent grams of carb counting, or we can do the insulin pumps with their attendent grams of carb counting!

The only thing that died is your pancreas! It got sick and quit working! If it was appendix that is easier to fix, simply have it out. But the pancreas has life saving secretions and when it dies, we have to do something else. Same difference tho. We have to pay attention!!

Nick Jonas does indeed have an insulin pump! He was devastated when diagnosed too! As was Mary Tyler Moore a lot of years ago in the dark ages of diabetes care!

Read some stuff on the internet that is for helping you to cope with this slight alteration to your life plan:
http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/
http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/NewlyDiagnosed.htm
http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/book/chapter9.shtml
http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/book/chapter10.shtml

And finally there are a couple of really good groups on My Space for teens with diabetes.

Support of one’s peergroup is very very important. You can educate your friends as you learn about this. Talk to them, have them read all the info the doctor has given you. Some of them will be subject to getting type 2 eventually and the treatments are very similar.

Is there any one out there dealing with a new diabetes treatment?
