I have type 2 diabetes. What is a healthy blood sugar reading?

Diabetes Diagnosis Add comments

My blood sugar reading after fasting is 5.1 and random blood sugar reading (after breakfast) is 5.5 I take medication for my diabetes. I watch everything I eat and workout everyday. What is a healthy blood sugar reading for fasting and randon levels?
My doctor said 4-5 is optimal. My sugar reading has come down from 22 upon diabetes diagnosis in mid Sept to 5.1 this past week. Thank you.

4.4 to 6.1 is normal. You’re doing great!! Right in the middle.

By the way, for those Americans who can’t divide or multiply by 18, here’s a handy converter: http://www.brist.plus.com/convert.htm

I’m in the US and we use a different numbering system and I do not remember how to translate it.
    I have found http://www.healthcentral.com/diabetes/
to be a good site for info.
Congratulations on bringing it down so well.
In US terms the current cutting edge advice is 100 or under for fasting. Under 130 one hour after eating. Never allowing BG levels to go over 140.
Just a few months ago the recommendations allowed a much higher range but they lowered it after finding that a lot more damage is done to the body by BG over 140.
Some experts are now saying that a good level after eating is more important than having a low, 6.0 (again in US) or lower A1C.
