The 5 Common Deadly Mistakes Diabetics Make and How to Avoid Them (part 2)

American Diabetes Association No Comments »

Part 2

BUT ALL CAN BE PREVENTABLE.

(Continued from Part 1) Although these startling numbers represent undeniable facts and a reflection of the real suffering the majority of diabetics go through BUT THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE YOUR FATE.

YES YOU CAN PREVENT ALL THESE DEADLY COMPLICATIONS!!!

Now I got you thinking!! “ Wait a minute! Are you saying that as a diabetic I have a say in avoiding all of these horrible outcomes?”

THIS IS A BIG ABSOLUTELY YES!!! AND WE (health professionals) HAVE THE EVIDENCE TO PROVE IT.

If it weren’t the case then you would not be receiving this report and I would not have spent the last 21 years during my pharmacy practice successfully counseling patients on how to do so and would not have spent the last 4 years of my life writing “Lifestyle Makeover for Diabetics” which gives ALL diabetics (newly diagnosed or not) ALL the tools they need to manage ALL aspects of diabetes control, prevent its complications, enjoy and expect a natural lifespan and best quality of life, ALL in a single volume.

If diabetes and its deadly complications were not manageable and preventable then the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org), the World Health Organization (www.who.int) and all other governmental health agencies would not be making every effort and take every opportunity with whatever means at their disposal to send the message out that diabetes is manageable and preventable.

The next question that could cross your mind would be: “If diabetes and complications are manageable and preventable then why are these devastating statistics so high, why the numbers keep on climbing and what is fueling all this?”

Answer: The main culprits fueling this ever growing epidemic and making it worse is none other than EXCESS WEIGHT, INACTIVITY and SMOKING.

Yes, people own daily choices, misinformed actions or inactions are the main contributors to this terrible outcome. What people bring home from food stores, what snacks they choose at home or work, how much activity they do during each day or the total lack of it are highly contributing factors. Whether people make any uninformed personal decisions about their medications, whether they appropriately monitor or don’t monitor their vital and crucially important parameters which could lead to blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure levels rising unnoticed and unleashing a fury of deadly complications.

Whether diabetics lead highly stressful lives and not do anything about it combined to whether they are smokers and continue to smoke, whether they take no actions or misinformed actions or buy into the “Diet” myth as solutions to their excessive weight, whether they buy into myths that diabetics have to be deprived of sweets for the rest of their lives (as a consequence most lash out and they start overeating sweets and everything else) and whether they act like their health is solely the responsibility of their doctor, ARE ALL PREVENTABLE FATAL FACTORS that each and every diabetic CAN AND MUST change to their favor.

During my 20 years in pharmacy practice, I passionately cared, counseled and helped people who are diabetics, have other chronic conditions such as high cholesterol and blood pressure, heart disease and those who are smokers, obese and have excess weight and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

Out of all these conditions, diabetics have to worry about many more issues and act on them all at the same time before they can bring diabetes complications to a halt. Not only that but the vast majority of diabetics suffer from any or all of the chronic diseases (mentioned in the previous paragraph) and to add fuel to the fire the overwhelming majority make unfavorable lifestyle choices, which to no one’s surprise worsens diabetes control. These are all complex and numerous issues for any layperson to deal with.

The end result brings the sad reality that out of every 10 diabetics ONLY 1 or 2 diabetics have their condition under control. The rest suffer deadly complications, succumb to diabetes and become part of the heart breaking statistics mentioned previously. These were sad findings that I witnessed every day during my pharmacy practice and are confirmed by reliable statistics.

I am no bearer of bad news or using scare tactics. I am not here to deliver glooming and bad news either and this is no scare tactic. I am just delivering reality, facts and a lot of hope.

Hope? You might ask! How can there be hope after all this bad news? Yes, I am here to tell you that YOU can control diabetes and bring it under control and prevent ALL of its deadly complications.

Some diabetes guidelines set low glycemic manage goals for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (such as a hemoglobin A1C level as low as 6.5% to 7.0%) to avoid or delay complications.

Our review and critique of recent large randomized trials in patients with type 2 diabetes suggest that tight glycemic control burdens patients with complex treatment programs, hypoglycemia, weight gain, and costs and offers uncertain benefits in return.

We believe clinicians should prioritize supporting well-being and healthy lifestyles, preventive care, and cardiovascular risk decrease in these patients.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are mainly high in this patient population. Improved glucose control, especially early in the course of diabetes, can slow or avert complications, preserve ß-cell function, and improve long-term outcomes.

Not all carbohydrate foods are created equal, in fact they behave quite differently in our bodies. The glycemic index or GI describes this difference by ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on our blood glucose levels.

Choosing low GI carbs – the ones that produce only small fluctuations in our blood glucose and insulin levels – is the secret to long-term health reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes and is the key to sustainable weight loss.

Within the last decade, new treatments and glycemic goals have created an opportunity to better manage this prevalent, chronic infection. Defects of insulin resistance and deficiency leading to type 2 diabetes can now be directly targeted with available therapies.

Though there is a link between hyperglycemia and cardiovascular risk, there is less evidence that glucose lowering is linked with reduction in risk.

Patients with type 2 diabetes whose glycated hemoglobin levels be reduced from 8 to 7% in the United Kingdom Prospective
Diabetes Study (UKPDS) did not exhibit a reduction in cardiovascular events, although a subgroup of patients treated with metformin had a lower risk of cardiovascular events.

Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs), completed during the past several years or currently underway, are important the scientific basis of contemporary diabetes care.

Home Remedies for Glycemic Control

Keep your mind blank in bed, try and not imagine about your problems while falling asleep.

If you are having a trouble sleeping properly at night, avoid naps during the day. Naps are great but they will make it harder for you to fall asleep.

Get comfortable pillows and mattress, your bed shouldn’t be too soft or too hard and your pillow just right.

Quit smoking and avoid drinking alcohol as they deplete your bodily fluids and may cause sleep problems.

Sleeping pills are not your best bet as they come with side effects- snoring, sleep apnea, dulling the brain and even lowering the IQ and may make you feel drowsy the next day.

How to Control Diabetes For Life

Uncategorized No Comments »

Every person who has diabetes has different needs. These steps for maintenance and control of diabetes is meant as a basic guideline; talk to your doctor about developing a plan of action for your particular needs.

Besides helping you feel better, controlling diabetes also reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, eye diseases, nerve damage (resulting in amputation and erectile dysfunction), kidney failure, and gum disease.

#1. Education

The first step to maintaining your body against any disease is to know your enemy inside and out. Knowing the difference between Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes (and which one you have) affects your approach to the disease.

And it is a serious disease. While it is manageable, and proper care can result in a long, healthy life, it still requires a serious approach. Diabetes can cause serious health problems down the road when left untreated.

#2. Regular Care

See your doctor on a regular basis. Discuss with him or her how often you need to have a diabetes check-up. Keep track of questions and concerns that you have, so that you can make sure you bring them up the next time you see your doctor. If something feels like it is not working properly, changes should be made as soon as possible.

Don’t be ashamed of it, either. Be open about your diabetes with family and friends. They can offer care and support when you are struggling.

#3. Control YOUR Diabetes

Instead of relying on generic articles for medical advice, talk to your doctor about your specific symptoms and how to treat your own body. You need to make sure you are eating healthy, exercising regularly, and looking after yourself – taking your medications and paying attention to your symptoms every day. All of these things can help keep diabetes at bay.

#4. Know Your “ABCs”

The three ABCs of diabetes are A1C (your blood glucose average), Blood pressure, and Cholesterol. This goes back to eating healthy, exercising regularly, and taking your medications. It is also important to test your blood glucose levels regularly, so that you know how you are progressing.

#5. Keep Track

When monitoring your blood glucose levels, keep a log. Don’t rely on your memory and guess how it looked last time – write it down every time. This can go a long way in keeping tabs on your levels and making sure that you can see and understand any trends that may be developing. This can help you pinpoint problems before it’s too late.

#6. Watch Out for Long-Term Problems

Controlling your ABCs will help you in preventing long-term health problems associated with diabetes, including:

* Heart attack
* Stroke
* Eye and Gum disease
* Kidney problems
* Nerve damage
* Foot amputation

Talk to you doctor about how often you should be tested for these different health problems. Diabetes puts you at a strong risk for these things, and knowing them and knowing your diabetes is the way to keep them from affecting you.

Diabetics that do not maintain control over their diabetes treatment can be very unhealthy and miserable. To avoid that, follow these steps and keep in touch with your doctor. There’s no reason why you can’t live a full, normal, healthy life with diabetes, as long as you keep up with your treatment.

Diabetes: Control daily sugar intake?what is ur comment????

Uncategorized 4 Comments »

DIABETES cases in the country are reaching alarming proportions. At the Dewan Rakyat last week, it was mentioned that at least 11 out of every 100 Malaysians suffer from this disease. Over the last five years, there has been a 27 per cent increase in the number of diabetes cases.
The number of children afflicted with diabetes is also showing an upward trend, with 1,305 cases reported in 2004 compared with 837 in 1999.
Diabetes Type 2 is strongly linked to high sugar consumption and obesity. In view of our country’s alarming diabetes rate, which is expected to rise steadily, urgent steps need to be taken.
The Consumers’ Association of Penang urges the Health Ministry to work with other ministries to take the following action: -To require manufacturers to amend their labels to show the amount of sugar in their food. This information must be understood easily by consumers. The sugar content could be shown graphically in terms of the number of teaspoons of sugar. (One teaspoon is equivalent to 5g.)
The guideline on sugar consumption is that it should not exceed 50g a day.
Daily sugar intake can come from many sources. CAP has found that some products, such as certain brands of fizzy drinks, contain about seven teaspoons of sugar.
The consumption of just one can of this drink in a day will result in a person’s sugar consumption almost reaching the maximum limit. With this improved labelling, consumers can see the amount of sugar they are consuming and adjust their habits accordingly.Parents must play their role in ensuring that highly-sugared products and sweets are not stocked in their homes.
An environment that is conducive for individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices should be created.
This is critical when it comes to the younger generation.

Asthma 2008, ‘you Can Control Asthma’

Asthma Guidelines No Comments »

The theme for asthma 2008 is ‘you can control asthma’. This is as a result of the rising asthma prevalence levels.  The theme for the year tries to let people know how to put the condition in check. This is by getting educated on the causes, control and preventative measures.

Controlling asthma is an easy task if you have all the information on the disease at your finger tips.  The most important information in controlling asthma is understanding the triggers.  Before you get to the triggers, you need to know what causes the asthma disease in your case.  This can be family history of asthma, eczema, allergies, environmental pollution, irritants at workplaces, smoking, viral infections and colds.  These are just some of the causes.

The triggers are anything that irritates the airways causing an asthma attack. Asthma 2008 sensitization campaign is trying to let people get to know what triggers attacks in their individual cases.  The triggers vary from one individual to the next. These include hormones, exercise, sex, weather, air pollution, smoking, pollen, house dust mites, medicines, emotions and animals. Once you know what triggers your condition, it is easy to avoid it.

Asthma 2008 guidelines try to help people realize the triggers, causes and how to control the condition.  As a result, the disease will be put in control all  over the world.  Asthma networks all over the world are trying to realize the dream of kicking asthma out to the world.  This is only possible if people learn ways of controlling it.

what is the different of treatment between diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2?

Diabetes Treatment Guidelines 2 Comments »

pharmacology and non-pharmacology… thanks…

Diabetes 1 your body produces no insulin and you must take insulin to keep your blood sugar under control (diet, excercise and oral hypoglycemics will sometimes be given to help control sugars).

Diabetes 2 your body does not produce enough insulin so treatment is aimed at helping your body control sugar … start by controlling diet, then add oral hypoglycemics (metformin, glyburide, avandia etc…) and insulin only if necessary.

HbAic test to see wether treatment is helping with longterm sugar control.

Hope this helps,

C
