In today’s world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

Perhaps your weakness is pistachio ice cream, brownies with nuts, or pancakes covered with syrup. Many of us crave sweets—sometimes throughout the day. Some of us may even be addicted to sugar. The problem is, large helpings of sugary foods can lead to substantial weight gain. But eating sugar-free does not necessarily guarantee weight loss.

A food may be sugar-free and still contain a great amount of calories and carbohydrates. You may be thinking that you can lose weight simply by using sugar substitutes. However, this is a naïve way of thinking, since some sugar substitutes increase your intake of both calories and carbs. For instance, the sugar substitute fructose adds calories and carbs to your daily diet. These types of sugar substitutes are often called sugar alcohols or polyols.

It should be stated that polyols can be highly beneficial. For instance, while they offer a sugary taste, they have fewer calories than sugar. They are particularly advantageous for people with diabetes and, unlike sugar, they do not cause tooth decay. You can find polyols in a number of baked goods and candies. Interestingly enough, they can even be found in mouthwashes.

Given the fact that polyols are low-cal, they can be helpful in a weight management program. Fortunately, there are a number of desserts that are both sugar-free and delicious. For instance, sugar-free lemon cheesecake is a healthy alternative to the typical high-calorie cheesecake. You can also make butterscotch and pumpkin pudding by using sugar-free butterscotch pudding mix.

A sugar-free version of Old-Fashioned Applesauce cake is made with reduced calorie margarine, Splenda, and unsweetened applesauce, while light chocolate peanut butter pie can be created with sugar-free chocolate pudding and fat-free whipped dessert topping. Meanwhile, sugar-free strawberry pie can be made with diet Sprite or 7-Up and sugar-free strawberry gelatin.

The American Diabetes Association heartily endorses sugar-free diets. The organization also recommends consuming at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day; a half-dozen servings of breads and cereals; no more than three servings of low-fat milk or yogurt, lean meats; and a limited amount of sweets and desserts.

When you dine in restaurants, the Diabetes Association recommends that you save half your meal for the next day in order to avoid calorie overload. You might also consider sharing a meal or dessert with someone else. Also, you might want to substitute a salad for potatoes. In addition, you should ask that your dressing or sauce be served on the side in order to attempt to control portions.

It is interesting to note that a food can be labeled “no sugar added” and still contain sugar. The label refers to the fact that no table sugar is involved; however, the food could still have its share of natural sugars. As a result, no-sugar-added food could have as many calories as other types of food. In addition, the Diabetes Association cautions that eating protein alone will not enhance your muscles. Rather, you need exercise to strengthen your muscles.

While eating sugar-free food can be beneficial, the Diabetes Association offers other tips for attempting to lose weight and keep it off. In general, the guidelines call for reducing calories and fat, exercising each day, not skipping breakfast, and maintaining a food log which indicates everything you have consumed on a daily basis.
Lessening your dependence on sugar can be an important first step toward improving your diet. But, as we have seen, simply eating sugar-free will not guarantee that you will achieve the weight loss you’re looking for. Weight reduction takes a great deal of discipline and patience. You did not gain all of your extra weight in a single day, so you can’t expect to be rid of it instantaneously.

Before cutting out sugar entirely from your diet, it’s best to check with your doctor. He or she can also give you some effective weight management techniques. It’s always best to have a medical doctor overseeing your weight loss plan. That can help to ensure that you maintain good health during the weight reduction process. With dedication and hard work, you can achieve your weight loss goals. You yourself may be astounded at your progress, once you begin a sensible diet plan.

Latest Evidence That Diets Don’t Work Over the Long Term

Most of the fad diets focus on low fat, low calorie or high protein diets, all in the hope of controlling yuor weight. However in a recent recommendation by The American Diabetes Association (ADA) was noted in the Medical Nutrition Therapy section dealing with weight loss. Until now, the ADA has not recommend low carbohydrate diets because of lack of sufficient scientific evidence supporting their safety and effectiveness.
 
The 2008 Recommendations include a statement recognizing the increasing evidence that weight-loss plans that restrict carbohydrate or fat calorie intake are equally effective for reducing weight in the short term (up to one year) only, but not over the long term. In addition, there is now evidence that the most important determinant of weight loss is not the composition of the diet, but whether the person can stick with it, and that some individuals are more likely to adhere to a low carbohydrate diet while others may find a low fat calorie-restricted diet easier to follow. However, how long the person can stick to this diet comes into the picture.
 
As it has in the past, the ADA continues to emphasize the importance of sustained, moderate weight loss and increased physical activity for people who are overweight or obese and at risk for diabetes or living with diabetes.
 
Dr Ann Albright, President, Health Care & Education, American Diabetes Association said, “The risks of overweight and obesity are well known. We recognize that people are looking for realistic ways to lose weight. The evidence is clear that both low-carbohydrate and low-fat calorie restricted diets result in similar weight loss at one year. We’re not endorsing either of these weight-loss plans over any other method of losing weight. What we want health care providers to know is that it’s important for patients to choose a plan that works for them, and that the health care team support their patients’ weight loss efforts and provide appropriate monitoring of patients’ health.”
 
Peopl on low carbohydrate diets may replace calories from carbohydrate with fat or protein. High protein diets may also worsen kidney problems. Therefore, it is also recommended that patients with kidney disease be counseled about appropriate intake of protein and that their kidney functions be monitored carefully.
 
Dr Albright further said, “Short-term weight loss is beneficial, but what is most important for health is keeping the weight off long-term. We also want to continue to emphasize the importance of regular physical activity, both to aid weight loss from calorie-restricted diets, and also for the positive health gains associated with exercise that are independent of weight loss.”
 
Being overweight or obese and inactive are major contributing factors to the onset of type 2 diabetes. Overweight and obesity also complicate the treatment of diabetes (both type 1 and type 2) and can contribute to the development of other health problems, such as heart disease and cancer.

Lose the Fat Diabetic Diet and Exercise Plan

Back in March of 2005 the results of the Diabetes Prevention Program were released by the American Diabetes Association. This study was conducted nationwide at 25 medical centers and tracked thousands of potential diabetics who were given a lose the fat diabetic diet and exercise plan. Everyone in the study group was pre-diabetic, meaning they all suffered from high blood sugar levels that were higher then normal but not in the diabetic range. Half of all people diagnosed with pre-diabetes will eventually become type 2 diabetics if left untreated.

There were two groups of people is this study. One half of the participants were given only dietary recommendations to follow. The other half were given the same diet but were also asked to exercise 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes per day.

The results of this study were unexpected. Those pre-diabetics who exercised along with following the diabetic diet reduced by 58% their risk of developing diabetes. The reason for this was simple; they lost weight because of these lifestyle changes. Researchers found that exercising and losing weight had the direct effect of lowering blood sugar levels to normal, which wasn’t thought to be possible.

It is thought that weight loss for those with pre-diabetes helps prevent the onset of diabetes but it also helps to reverse the damage to insulin producing cells caused by obesity. Depending on how much you weigh it was found that losing 5% to 7% of your body weight can make a difference.

The key to this diet is eating healthy foods that not help the pre-diabetic lose weight but also keep the weight off. The American Diabetes Association recommends a daily diet that consists of the following.

* Grain – 6-11 servings per day (Bread, Cereal, Rice, Pasta)
* Vegetables – 3-5 servings per day
* Fruits – 2-4 servings per day
* Milk – 2-3 servings per day
* Meat – 4-6 ounces per day (Meat, eggs, fish, dried beans, nuts and peanut butter)
* Fats, Sweets, Alcohol – Occasional treats

Not only is this diet recommended for diabetes but it is also endorsed by the American Heart Association to help combat the risks for heart disease. This points out how important it is to eat healthy and follow a fat loss diabetic diet and exercise program.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, then it is really important that you adjust your eating habits in a way that will keep your blood sugar levels under control. While there is no “one size fits all” diet plan for every person who is a diabetic, there are some set guidelines that you can follow. The American Diabetic Diet is a popular dietary guideline that can give you a basic idea of the types of foods, and the quantity of foods you should eat to maintain good health.

 

When you have diabetes, you must learn to always be mindful of how many carbohydrate foods, protein foods and foods containing fat and sugar you consume. If you take the time to sit down with a dietary nutritionist, they can help create an individualized eating plan for you to follow. Or, you can go online and find a good diabetes diet for weight loss. Most diabetics can eat the same types of foods that everyone else eats.

 

The Diabetic Food Pyramid allows you to eat: six starches, two milks, four to six ounces of meat or meat substitutes, three vegetables, two fruits and up to three fats per day. This provides you with a range of between 1,200 and 1,600 calories per day.

 

The good news is, you do not have to restrict yourself to special diabetic meals. You can simply pick up a recipe book that shows you how to control diabetes with diet and exercise, and make a wide variety of delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner meals.

 

You will have to be careful about portion sizes and make sure to not overeat any one type of food. Balancing the portions and type of food that you eat during each meal is key to managing your blood sugar levels. Also, if you are taking insulin shots or oral diabetes medication, you may need to eat at certain times of the day in order to comply with medication instructions.

 

One thing that you will be told by your doctor and nutritionist, is that you need to follow a regular eating schedule. Instead of eating three meals a day, you may find that you’re now eating six small meals a day, plus a snack here and there. Smaller meals will help to keep your energy and sugar levels stable throughout the day. It may help for you to carry around a small notebook that reminds you of when you have to eat a meal or snack. As you get used to your new dietary routine, you’ll automatically remember.

 

The most important foods you’ll be eating during the day contain carbohydrates and protein foods. You must make sure that you eat at all times of the day, and never skip any meals. Even if you’re in the process of losing weight, you do not skip a meal. Skipping meals won’t help you lose the weight, and it will make it more difficult for you to manage sugar levels.

 

It’s important for you to eat lots of carbohydrate foods during the day, and when you begin choosing from this group, take care to make healthier choices. Carbohydrates produce energy, and as you probably know, breaks down in the bloodstream as sugar. However, you do not need to eliminate them from your diet, just choose items such as brown rice, whole grain bread, yams, quinoa and rolled oats.

 

Protein foods are something that your body needs for general good health. Whether you are a meat eater or vegetarian, you must have protein foods in order to stay healthy. Some good protein food choices are: lean meats (chicken, turkey, beef, fish, lamb), eggs, tofu, cottage cheese and Swiss cheese.

 

If you are diabetic, and also need to lose a significant amount of weight, you’ll be watching your fat intake. Although, there will be some fat found in the foods on the Diabetic Food Pyramid, most of those foods have natural fat that won’t be harmful in small amounts. You really need to be concerned about the hidden fats that can be found in many store bought packaged foods. Be sure to read each label on packaged food items to see what the fat content is. If it is a high percentage, then put it back on the shelf. High cholesterol is a major contributor to weight gain and heart disease.

 

At first, you may find it hard to give up some of your favorite fat laden foods like chips, pastries, and ready to eat food. However, you can’t afford to sabotage your dietary needs any longer. The same goes for fast food. If you eat that huge double patty burger laden down with cheese, bacon and fatty dressing, large fries and soda, it may taste good at the time, but ultimately, these foods will do nothing to help you drop the pounds.

 

Many diabetics hate the idea of giving up their favorite snacks and sweets. While you must drastically reduce the amount of sweets you eat, you don’t actually have to give them up forever. You can eat treats that contain sugar every once in a while. There are also lots of sugar-free alternatives available. These alternative sweets are created especially for people on diets for cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

 

One way to think about your new dietary eating habits, is to understand that you are now putting your health and well being above all else. In order to enjoy life at its fullest, you need to be both happy and healthy. When you are struggling with weight issues and diabetes, your quality of life is greatly diminished. If you need motivation to help get you through some of the rough spots during this period of adjustment, look for a support group of like minded people, either in your local community, or online. There are millions of people just like yourself who are living with diabetes, and many are willing to share their experiences and give you advice.

 

Many people, including celebrities, are living full lives while also monitoring their diabetes. You will find that by following the recommended guidelines in the American Diabetic Diet plan, you will be able to manage your condition quite easily. Healthy food choices, exercise and a positive outlook on life are all keys to controlling diabetes.
